625 Lbs!!! WOW!!! Community Garden Update.

produce-procurement

It’s the end of the Garden Season and we just completed the last harvest of the year just last week! What a great garden year it has been. Although we grew in just 5 garden beds and kept on setting up more for the following year (can’t wait) we managed to harvest 625lbs! What a great first year number! Just thinking about the numbers we’ll have next year with 12 garden beds! WOW!

The Diner prepared, froze and used as much as it could, some was set out for people to take home with them. There was so much this year we had to donate food to various food programs in the city. Programs such as the Salvation Army and Downtown Mission. Both locations were very thankful for the fresh produce!

As some are aware, the Ten Friends Community Garden is a part of the Community Garden Collective. Through this the garden received a donation from Caesars Windsor. We received Hazelnut Bushes and Blackberry Canes. These are already in the garden and we hope for a great yield next year from those! As always we will need LOTS of volunteers for next years garden. If you are interested please submit a VOLUNTEER CONTACT REQUEST via this site and we will file it away for next years’ season!

We hope that those who came out and helped this year had a great time, it really was a HUGE success! Thank you to all who participated and remember, BIG plans for next year too!

Thank you all!

Amazing People – Mental Illness is NOT the end. (My Experience)

fair-trade-TFD-10000

Hi there, my name is Randy Comeau, I work at Ten Friends Diner as Assistant to the Director.  I would like to share with you my experience over the past few years with Ten Friends Diner.

Over the past three and a half years I have come to know several people at Ten Friends Diner.  I started out a customer simply out of curiosity through seeing this little homey looking place off the side of the road.  My wife and I had passed by it several times and commented we’d love to give it a try “someday”.  That someday came.  I remember our first experience.

We found parking on the street and entered through the entrance doors and were welcomed with smiling faces and directed to a seat.  At first my wife and I just exchanged awkward glances, but soon came to see the family that this small Diner (which we still knew nothing about other than it was a Diner) was.  It seemed that all the people there interacted like a tight knit family and this was a breath of fresh air.  As we were given our menus we then learned about the program as there was a description printed on the menu itself.  Moved and intrigued we spoke about how misunderstood Mental Illness is.  The food arrived and we were blown away by the portions, the taste and the fact that almost everything on our plate was not only made with love, but was mostly home made!  This became our weekend “hangout”.

As we got to know the people working the Diner we got to know how great each of them was.  A great gift most do not realize and is under-recognized is growing a friendship with others.

Eventually I was approached to help and volunteer.  How could I say no? So I attended my first event/fundraiser with the “crew”.  I remember it vividly.  It was at the University of Windsor for Mental Health Awareness Week, there was a guest speaker on stage speaking about Mental Illness and there we were as the refreshment area!  It was so much fun just being out in the community with people from the Diner as well as customers!  Many people did not know Ten Friends Diner was a program helping people with Mental Illness, but this event gave the opportunity to educate and spread the word.  We took each opportunity to ask “Do you know what Ten Friends Diner is about?”.  Many people were amazed that people with Mental Illness were actually out DOING something.  I thought to myself that day, if they only knew each of the people here personally, they’d know how amazing each of them really is.  Unfortunately most people do not have the time or desire or there is a stigma attached to Mental Illness so there is fear there and thus they never step their foot in the door to experience the people, the faces, the personalities of Mental Illness.  The thing that I came to realize early on is that the people I was now surrounded by at the Diner were not very different than you or I, in fact I count many my friends today.  The only difference I found is each personality and how unique each person was/is.

I think as I came to see how great the people at the Diner were they also were seeing me for me (which is a rarity in this world) and I was asked to sit on the Board of Directors.  An honor.  I accepted and of course set to work in giving ideas, direction and my hands to help where needed.

Eventually I was asked by the Director (who is also an amazing friend as well!) to come on board as STAFF to help her directly as Assistant to her.  This was not only a shock to me because I was unprepared for this proposition but I was also very excited too!  A chance to work directly with people I’d come to admire for their endurance to overcome each day, positive personalities and drive to make things work.  Again, I couldn’t say no.  So over time (2 years) this gave me the opportunity to make a more direct impact on the program at Ten Friends Diner.  With background in Business Development and Marketing I was able to help in many ways to advance the program.  Everything from a newly designed menu and food items to spearheading a Mental Health Awareness Ribbon Campaign (make sure you donate and get your ribbon this winter!) as well, just this year starting a Community Garden.  What a privilege!

This experience expressed here is simply just the tip of the iceberg on what I experienced.  I would like each person reading this to engage in their Community and engage with a program or people who have a Mental Illness.  You will learn how awesome people are.  I challenge you to take a step, make a difference.
